Billy Apple®: Life/Work and Karl Maughan took out the Booksellers Aotearoa New Zealand People’s Choice Award at this year’s PANZ Book Design Awards. The joint win was a surprise twist in the long-awaited ceremony.
The AUP team is thrilled by the recognition for Billy Apple designers Arch Turner and Alexandra Turner from Inhouse Design, and for Karl Maughan designers Hannah Valentine and Gabriella Stead from Gow Langsford Gallery.
Billy Apple was also awarded the PANZ Award for Best Typography, with Alexandra Turner and Arch MacDonnell being commended on their detailed work. The judges remarked that the book’s type design ‘. . . is an ode to Futura (Apple’s signature typeface) and Untitled Sans, with complex hierarchies and levels of information’.
It was a big night for industry newcomer Turner, who also received the Hachette Aotearoa New Zealand Emerging Designer Award.
Congratulations to all the other shortlisted designers and winners for being recognised in this year’s awards. For a full list of the results and to read the judges’ comments, visit the PANZ website.
