Love in a Bookstore or Your Money Back
Sarah Quigley
Love in a Bookstore or Your Money Back is an attractive and accessible collection from an increasingly accomplished writer. The poems are chiefly poised lyrics written in a relaxed conversational tone and in the persona of a modern young woman who travels, observes, writes. They are frequently snatches from a personal story – friends, relations, lovers appear and disappear, urban scenes come and go.
The first section of the book touches on love in various forms and at various moments; the central section has a German focus and is more disturbing and sombre; in the last section, entitled ‘The bookstore’, the poet explores the life of a writer, again in momentary glimpses.
Sarah Quigley has a gentle reflective wit and a nice sense of a poem’s shape and tone.
