We are thrilled that Marti Friedlander: Portraits of the Artists by Leonard Bell has been shortlisted for the Booksellers Aotearoa New Zealand Award for Illustrated Non-Fiction in the 2021 Ockham New Zealand Book Awards.
Featuring more than 250 photographs, Marti Friedlander: Portraits of the Artists chronicles the changing face of the arts in New Zealand through the lens of Marti Friedlander’s powerful photography.
We want to share our warm congratulations to all titles shortlisted in this year’s book awards and to the dedicated teams behind them.‘At Auckland University Press, we have been lucky enough to work with both Marti Friedlander and Leonard Bell for many years. Marti wrote a brilliant memoir for us, Self-Portrait, and then, together with her husband Gerrard, established and supported our Creative Lives series, which has produced a pile of award-winning books. And Len Bell has published with AUP for three decades. We miss Marti and we love seeing Len’s celebration of her work – and of the artists and writers who inspired her – recognised in the Ockhams,’ says Director of Auckland University Press, Sam Elworthy.
