Dr Merimeri Penfold (Ngāti Kuri; 1920 – 2014) was the kuia of the University of Auckland and was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Māori in 2001. She has been a consultant to the government on a number of Māori social and child-policy issues. Her project prior to The Tribes of Muriwhenua was a translation into Māori of Shakespearean sonnets: Nga waiata aroha a Hekepia/Love sonnets by Shakespeare: Nine Sonnets (Holloway Press, 2000).
