Meat Lovers by Rebecca Hawkes is shortlisted for the UK Poet Laureate’s nature and eco-poetry prize – The Laurel Prize 2022.
The Laurel Prize, funded by UK Poet Laureate Simon Armitage’s Laureate’s honourium is awarded to the best collection of environmental or nature poetry published that year.
Poetry is a way for people to connect deeply with this living world – whether celebrating natural splendours or confronting environmental degradation,’ says Rebecca. ‘It is an honour to be considered alongside all the phenomenal writers longlisted, and their powerful work.’
The shortlist for 2022 – judged this year by the poets Glyn Maxwell (Chair), and Elena Karina Byrne, and Tishani Doshi – includes:
- Rebecca Hawkes, Meat Lovers (Auckland University Press)
- Jemma Borg, Wilder (Pavilion Books)
- Steve Ely, The European Eel (Longbarrow Press)
- Cynthia Miller, Honorifics (Nine Arches Press)
- Linda France, The Knucklebone Floor (Smokestack Books)
The recipient of the award is presented with £5,000 (1st prize), £2,000 (2nd prize), and £1,000 (3rd prize). There’s also a £500 prize for Best First Collection.
The winners will be announced on Friday 9 September.
